Hardwood Floor Maintenance

After your new floors have been installed, there are several things you can do to maximize the life of your floors:

  1. Place felt glides on the feet of your furniture.
  2. Wait a full two days after complete before moving your furniture onto your new floor.
  3. Wait at least two full weeks before placing any area rugs on your floor.
  4. Try not to drag hard or heavy objects across your floor.

Routine Maintenance

The easiest way to keep your floor looking new is to take good care of it. You should sweep or dust your floor on a regular basis to keep it free of dust and grit. Avoid using soaps or waxes on your wood floor, as these will prevent future recoats from sticking to the polyurethane.

Recoat Your Floors When Needed

How often your floors need to be recoated depends on traffic. High-traffic areas, like kitchens and living rooms often need to be recoated every 3-4 years. Lower-traffic areas may last up to 20 years before requiring a recoat. If you begin to notice any wear patterns in your floor, contact us so that we can take a look at it. Please note, however, that recoating does not fix a floor — areas that have dents, deep scratches or are extremely worn need to be repaired. As well, recoating will not bring the color back toy your floor — for that, you will need to consider refinishing.
